READ OUR PATIENT SUCCESS STORIES!

Every obstacle of scoliosis is addressed in ScoliAcademy™ through a series of treatments and training. Below is a short list of activities included in each course. You can read more about the care below on our Treatments page or continue reading below for a short explanation of care.

  • Diagnosis of Root Cause: Key diagnostic tools we use in understanding the root cause of the scoliosis include: MRI, clinical tests for nerve tension, neurologic functional testing, nutritional and biochemical testing, cranial, dental, and upper cervical evaluation, genetic testing, such as the ScoliScore test.
  • Spinal Weighting Exercise Custom designed and fit spinal weighting devices are created for each patient creating a scoliosis exercises program that strengthens the back as well as reduces rotation and Cobb angle in the devices.
  • Scoliosis Traction Chair (STC) A good traction chair routine will stretch a spine far straighter than any brace can. Read more about the Scoliosis Traction Chair by clicking here!

  • Selection and Testing of Scoliosis Brace – Not all patients require bracing! Here at JJHC we design and fit our braces start to finish.  Once the brace is made, it must be tested for fit and effectiveness. Check out more about bracing at JJHC by clicking here!
  • Continuous Passive Mobilization This is a tried-and-true method for releasing contractures of the soft tissue, or making the spine more flexible. Continuous Passive Mobilization means that the patient’s stiff joints are being exercised with assistance of a device rather than with just their own strength.  This can achieve the most powerful “loosening” effect on the spine, and is critical for success when a spine is stuck in its scoliotic posture.
  • ADL training “Activities of Daily Living” It is not uncommon for a patient to spend two hours a day performing excellent scoliosis therapy at home, only to spend the rest of the 22 hours of the day engaging in activity that is making the spine worse.  No matter how great the scoliosis exercises are, what the patient does in the other 22 hours of the day has tremendous effect on success or failure in the outcome of the case.
  • Schroth-based scoliosis exercise training A well researched and accepted form of non-surgical scoliosis care, read more about Schroth based physiotherapy and it’s advantages by clicking here!
  • Nutritional analyses and guidance Patients will receive customized nutritional guidance based on their laboratory findings, genetic arrays and unique metabolic needs.

Using a comprehensive set of scoliosis treatments individualized to your curve…

  • Rapid curve reduction
All-day scoliosis therapy is performed during the treatment course. A key goal of this in-office therapy is to rapidly reduce the size of the patient’s Cobb angle.
  • Root Cause Identification and Treatment
    (if not already known).
  • Developing an “All Inclusive”  Course
A custom program is designed for each individual.
  • Testing
For fit, quality, and effectiveness of all the treatments to each individuals case.
  • Education and Training
Patients (and parents) learn a complete home scoliosis routine to mimic their time at Scoliosis Academy™ to yield permanent, long-term results.
  • Success
Patients and parents see success through setting goals for their Cobb angle, and for their home routine over the next 3 months.
What are considered ‘reasonable’ and ‘attainable’ treatment goals by today’s top scoliosis experts?
SOSORT, or the “International Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment” has published in  the Scoliosis Journal in 2005 a  Consensus paper titled ”Why do we treat adolescent idiopathic scoliosis?”  Here are the agreed upon treatment goals that SOSORT experts listed:

  • To stop curve progression at puberty (or possibly even reduce it).
  • To prevent or treat respiratory dysfunction
  • To prevent or treat spinal pain syndromes
  • To improve aesthetics via postural correction

These are all the SAME GOALS that JJHC has for each of their ScoliAcademy™ enrollees!

For people looking to join the US Military, scoliosis can be a huge obstacle. Regulations states disqualification with “lumbar scoliosis greater than 20 degrees, thoracic scoliosis greater than 30 degrees, or kyphosis and lordosis greater than 55 degrees when measured by the Cobb method”. In some cases, ScoliAcademy™ can be the solution necessary to join as we reduce Cobb measurements below the threshold of disqualification. In order to see if you could see reduction, check out our Contact Us page!

ScoliAcademy™ enrollment begins on every Monday and programs range, starting at 5-10 days and for international and severe cases, sometimes longer in office, followed by 3 months of a ScoliAcademy™ home program. The length of time in office that is right for you or your child will be determined by the doctor after a thorough case review looking at variables such as curve size, amount of curve rotation, and the number of goals that need to be obtained within your visit. Most commonly, a 10 day starting course is a first step in every program, with daily therapies from 9 am to 4:30.

Three-Month ScoliAcademy™ Home Program
After the first course at Janzen and Janzen, patients follow a three-month period of their ScoliAcademy™ home program. During this time, doctors, their staff, parents, and patients are encouraged to stay in continued communication by Skype appointment, e-mail, or telephone. Close monitoring and adherence to the prescribed home program is imperative for success.

FOLLOW UP COURSES

A One-Week Follow Up Course Is Recommended Every Three Months Until Curve Resolution or Skeletal Maturity and are necessary to ensure continued ScoliAcademy™ home program success.  The key goals and events of the follow up treatment courses are as follows:

Follow Up Scoliosis Treatment Course

  • Scoliosis Cobb measure checkup
An image of the spine every three months is typically recommended.  A standing low-dose X-ray or radiation-free MRI is obtained to assess the scoliosis for changes in shape and size.  A stable reduction in spinal curvature is often the anticipated goal, though simply stopping progression of the curve is an outstanding achievement as well.
  • Test quality of home routines
After doing home exercises, patients are tested by the doctors and therapists to evaluate the quality and skill with which patients are performing prescribed exercises.  It is typical for errors to creep into the exercise routine, which must be caught and corrected.  Even our best “students” will need refinement and coaching on proper technique after unattended home care.
  • Brace and spinal weight advancement
After home use, belts stretch or come loose, padding changes shape, bodies grow taller, and spinal curves change in size and shape.  This will require re-tuning the fit of both the scoliosis brace and spinal weighting devices.  If patients have succeeded in meeting their at home goals, they will usually be ready for a more aggressive brace and spinal weighting exercises.
  • Progression of all home routines
If the at-home exercise program was effective, the patient is often ready to be advanced in the difficulty or challenge of the home exercises, making the exercises more challenging and effective.
  • Rapid curve reduction
All-day in-office treatment for rapidly reducing the scoliosis curve is performed during this week-long scoliosis followup.  Almost everyone will typically achieve some level of reduction at each Scoliosis Academy™ Course.  The trick is to train the patient to continue this success at home.  Continued follow-up Treatment Courses are the most effective way to ensure this success.
