The Eckard Table, seen to the right, is exclusively an in-office treatment to continue restoring distortion of the soft tissue back to normal. It is unique to the Modified Traction Chair in that it flexes and moves while under traction allowing for more tension and repetition to occur in the soft tissue. Rotation in the thoracic rib cage is also more easily treated with the Eckard Table. This is a tried-and-true method for releasing contractures of the soft tissue. Continuous Passive Mobilization means that the patient’s stiff joints are being exercised with external assistance rather than on their own. This can achieve the most powerful “loosening” effect on the spine, and is critical for success when a spine is stuck in its scoliotic posture.

The Modified Traction Chair is a great tool to create mobilization within the spine and raise the ceiling for improvement of any conservative scoliosis treatment course. Above are a series of in Traction Chair images showing improvement in Cobb angle and rib distortion. Soft tissue distortion can create rigidity and tight contractures, or inflexibility, in the spine. This rigidity and stiffness makes it very difficult to treat as the patient ages and the scoliosis gets “set” in place. The spine becomes rigid and inflexible. The discs and joints typically become degenerated and arthritic making the spine rigid, painful and more difficult to treat. This is very important in a good scoliosis treatment course.

For example, a 10 year old might respond like the pictures above and below. A 50 year old might only improve 50% compared to the 12 year old because the soft tissue has been “set” for 40 additional years with no loosening taking place. The spine becomes rigid and inflexible. The discs and joints typically become degenerated and arthritic making the spine rigid, painful and more difficult to treat. This is very important in a good scoliosis treatment program.

The advantages of using a Modified Traction Chair:
1. Keeps the spine in straighter position for 30 minutes to allow visco-elastic creep of ligaments and discs gives the scoliosis a chance to get straighter
2. Improves effectiveness of Spinal Weighting
3. Improves effectiveness of Brace
4. Makes most scoliosis treatment courses go faster and more effective
